RE: Rejuvenating a Picholine Grove

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>We usually don't recommend any fertilizers when one severely prunes trees
for rejuvenation - with such a small top resulting from the pruning,
excessive vigor usually results. However, in your area where the soils may
not be quite a fertile as in the Valley and fertilizer had not been applied
for years, some Nitrogen (N) and Potassium (K) (not phosphorus) probably
wouldn't hurt. Apply 1 lb of actual N per tree (e.g. if you use ammonium
sulfate, this is 21% N so you would apply roughly 5 lbs of the product to
get 1 lb of N) in late January and 10 lbs of potassium sulfate (applied in a
band at the drip line of the tree) now. This should ensure good vigor
(hoping it doesn't result in excessive vigor).

Subject: [OliveOil] Rejuvenating a Picholine Grove

Hi All - I had written to you earlier concerning rejuvenating a hundred year
old grove of Picholine trees in southern Napa County in California. The
trees have not been tended for at least 40-50 years, and are not bearing
fruit. Although, we don't know for sure, we are assuming that there are no
other cross pollinating cultivars in the grove, and would like to make sure
that cross pollinators are present. We have read and been told that
Maurino,
Frantoio and Manzanillo would be appropriate. Do you have recommendations
for pollinators for Picholine?

We have begun extensive pruning and would like to apply fertilizer this
winter. We have heard that when rejuvenating old trees, for the first year
you should not apply Nitrogen. Should we be applying only Phosphorus and
Potassium, or should we add Nitrogen as well? I'd appreciate any
suggestions.

Thanks,

Alan Friedman
