We have done a considerable amount of work (primarily insecticides) trying
to control Black Vine Weevil in the soil (i.e. larval and pupal stages).
Nothing has been successful. Topical application to the adult population in
the tree has also been disappointing although some tell of some success with
Diazinon applied at night as a heavy, hand spray application to trunks and
limbs. Other techniques claiming some control include a wide band of tin
foil wrapped around the trunk (the weevils can't cross it) or the same with
a band of sticky "tangle foot" on the tin foil. In the Bari area of Italy,
we were shown a technique where the trunks were wrapped with a "rock wool"
type material (somewhat like what's contained in batting but not really the
same) - apparently the weevils try and cross this and get tangled in the
fuzzy wool. Of course, keeping the "skirts" of the tree from touching the
ground so access can only be up the trunk is essential with any of this.

Subject: [OliveOil] Black vine weevil

Has anyone had any experience with these little beasties, we have a
localised infestation. We have sprayed with Neem oil in the hope that the
flovour may be offputting but what can we do about the eggs/larvae around
the roots?
Any ideas anyone.

Thanks
