Olive Mill Effluents

<pre>Colleagues and fellow oil lovers.............

A comment on the wastes produced during oil
extraction..............

We have been working with Tunisian colleagues on treatment
options for both liquid waste and solid waste (from the
traditional and 3 phase systems), as well as the sludge from
the 2 phase system. This has now broadened to include
workers from Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Jordan and Portugal -
and we are in the process of contacting people in Spain and
Italy too, to form a network to share best practice. As you
might expect - there is no simple solution; and certainly
none at a cost that most mill owners can afford. I can
forward more info. to individuals if required - but 2
observations:
1) The 2 phase system can be highly polluting - the semi
solid that is produced is (generally speaking) a more
difficult waste to deal with by virtue of its particular
water/solid content
2) Olive oil manufacture produces one of the most
(organically) polluting wastewaters of any process - so, much
as I love oil myself, it's always worth considering this when
you eat that salad!!!
