RE: labeling - what questions to ask a producer

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>You need to specify accurately what the adhesive on the labels is that is
required for the bottles to be used and the labelling machine to be used.
Is the bottle exterior washed before or after filling or not? Most moulds
used in manufacturing bottles are sprayed with a release agent and this can
cause problems with adhesion of labels. The labels/bottles we use require
the bottle to be slightly heated up in order to get good adhesion of the
lables. This can be done with hot water(i.e. a washing cycle) or with a hot
air blower. It can be a very localised application of heat,. i.e. it should
transmit hardly any heat at all to the oil.

What also is important to specify is the physical dimemensions of the roll
of labels - I am assuming the labels will be on a roll. There is a inner
tube that must fit onto the spindle on the machine (like a toilet roll).
What is the required inside diameter ? - the machine I know has a tapered
spindle that can accept a range of i.d.'s. There is probably also a limit
to the outer diameter of the roll of labels - where it starts hitting other
parts of the machine.

What must be specified very carefuly is the winding - how must the labels be
wound onto the roll? If you look at the wound up roll, are the labels on
the outside of the backing paper or the inside? Does it coil up clockwise
or anti-clockwise. Is the label right side up or upside down? There are
about 8 permutations. If you send me a fax no to kupper@... I will
fax you a set of simple diagrams that illustrate the winding. They are
pictures, so there is no problem with language. Note that the front and
rear labels are often wound differently because they come from opposite
sides of the machine.

Subject: [OliveOil] labeling - what questions to ask a producer

Hi all,

I'm working with an italian oil producer on a joint
venture, and I'm trying to help them handle some of the
logistics to get their bottled oil to the US.

One thing I've been doing is label design. Now, it's time
for printing. The printer they talked about using in Italy
might take up to 3 months to do the job, which doesn't work
with our timeline, so I offered to handle the printing in
the US and ship them the labels.

I'm trying to communicate most efficiently with our italian
partners, which has been a bit of a challenge. So, my
question for the group is this: what exactly do I need to
ask them to make sure that I get the labels printed
correctly?

The labels have been sized to fit the bottle in question,
so I'm really asking about how to ask them about their
bottling and labeling machine (I think). How do I get the
information my printer needs, making sure the end product
with work?

You can tell I'm new at this - please bear with the newbie
question.

Thanks for any tips, Nico
