Had they been acclimatised or hardened off before planting (assuming they
came from more temperate zones)? I would have thought Mudgee was wet enough
during Winter in any event.

Perhaps take a leaf from the broad acre grape growers who light fires/smoke
systems when frost danger imminent. Has worked well for one person down our
way (in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia)
