<pre>Dear Margaret
My understanding is that after 20 December 2003, all food sold in Australia
(including imported) is required to meet the new food standards code( source:
Food Standards Australia & New Zealand - Standard 1.1.1). There are a few
exceptions eg food sold at fund raising events, and also, some transitional
arrangements for long life foods eg wine that was labelled some time ago. There
are also a few products that, while having to comply with the new code, don't
necessarily have to include the nutrition information panel eg alcoholic
beverages, vinegar, tea, coffee (source FSANZ Std. 1.2.8).
Like you, I am a micro - producer and find it disappointing that some producers
haven't taken the trouble to find out what their commitments are if they wish to
sell their product. On a positive note, the industry associations are promoting
the "truth in labelling" and compliance with appropriate regulations. To assist
with the latter, the AOA published labelling guidelines in The Olive Press and
on its website early 2003.
Perhaps your local olive association could become involved and help in the
education of those producers who haven't yet caught up with the new labelling
requirements.
kind regards

Subject: [OliveOil] food labelling, Oz regulations
Dear all,
I've noticed an awful lot of current product out there in regional areas
without food labelling. I thought as from this year it was compulsory to
comply, and supply back labels with intensive info?
As a micro-producer [ 2000 trees] I find it galling to say the least, that
we've gone to the expense and trouble, but for what?
Anybody know the deal?
Margaret,
