<pre>HELLO EVERYONE & WELCOME TO THE FIRST NEWSLETTER OF THE AUSTRALIAN
AND NEW ZEALAND ORGANIC OLIVE ASSOCIATION!

It's been a few months since the inaugural meeting in Melbourne
on the 25th May, and we assume that everyone has been as busy as we
have through the 2002 olive season and we hope everyone had a good
season this year. Now that we have a bit more time, we are sending
you this short newsletter to bring you up to speed on progress.

ANZOOA MEETING IN ADELAIDE, 11th OCTOBER 2002
The Australian and New Zealand Organic Olive Association (ANZOOA)
will be holding a meeting in Adelaide on the 11th October, to
coincide with the national olives conference being held in the city
at that time.

· DATE: Friday 11th October, 2002
· VENUE: Hyatt Regency Hotel (exact room to be announced).
· TIME: 5.30 pm (after final conference session for the day)

We thought that the time and place was suitable seeing as many olive
delegates will be converging on the city for the national conference
in October. The exact room we use is yet to be finalised, and we will
notify everyone of those details as soon as they are to hand. We look
forward to meeting as many of our friends there as possible!

FREE INTERNET WEBSITE FOR "OLIVESORGANIC" MEMBERS

"OlivesOrganic" is now offering free web space to its
members. This means that those members who haven't got access to web
sites can now establish an online presence, at no charge, as part of
the www.OlivesOrganic.com website.

For example, if your grove were called "Earth and Sky
Olives", your address would be www.olivesorganic.com/earthandsky. All
you have to do is to forward us the promotional information of your
business (text, images, logo artwork, contact details etc), and we
will post it to the Internet free of charge. This will enable you to
advertise your organic olive business to millions of people as well
as giving you the ability to include a website address on your
business stationary.

REAL-TIME DISCUSSION BOARD COMING SOON
We will soon have our discussion board up and running. This will
enable members (the main section will be limited to members only) to
post and reply to topics of interest to us all, and to have access to
direct knowledge from all sectors of our industry. Being "real
time" means questions and replies appear immediately after you send
them, rather than waiting for a moderator to approve them (which can
take weeks). There will be sections covering horticultural topics,
grove management, pest and weed control, fertilisation, inputs,
pruning, grafting irrigation etc, as well as sections covering
processing, marketing, certification and broader organic issues. We
will also include a section for NON-organic specific topics, and this
will be open to the public for general discussions. Members will be
advised as soon as it is implemented. Stay tuned!

STINGER THERMAL-WEEDER DEMONSTRATION

This has been postponed due to the technology being sold and the
machine being relocated to the eastern states. We have approached the
new owners and while they are happy to provide a demonstration for
us, it will have to be rescheduled. Mr Ian Johnston has promised to
keep us informed and to organise a demo for a later time and at a new
location.

Watch this space.

GM CROPS ARE ECONOMIC DISASTER SHOWS NEW REPORT
Genetically modified crops have been an economic disaster in the USA
and Canada according to a new report published by the Soil
Association.

The Soil Association estimates that GM soya, maize and oilseed rape
could have cost the US economy $12 billion (£8 billion) since 1999
in farm subsidies, lower crop prices, loss of major export orders and
product recalls. Farmers are not achieving the higher profits
promised by the biotechnology companies as markets for GM food
collapse. Widespread GM contamination at all levels of the food and
farming industry is the major cause of these difficulties.
