<pre>To: Lee, Kenneth, Andrew & Val, Triki, Sil, Gareth, Jim Dixon, and the many
other new contributors to the list, I know I missed quite a few.

Thank you for taking the time to introduce yourselves and what you do. As you
see there is a tremendous interest in this group to learn about one another and
to share with our experiences and knowledge about our favorite topic, Olives and
Olive Oil.

I know many have wrote to me personally and mentioned that they really enjoy the
list, but they don't have anything to contribute, yet. However, from just the
brief information they sent me, it makes and excellent introduction messages to
this fine group. So, to those who are still lurking around, don't be left out.
Put your two cents in.

To those of you who are avid contributors to this community, Phil, Peter, Brian,
Marco, Stan, and others, your messages and contributions are very much
appreciated.

To all, of course, thank you so much for making this list a premier and a
leading cyberspace discussion group on Olives and Olive Oil. Your sticking
around and following of the list guidelines is certainly appreciated by myself
and all.

At this time, I have a proposal to improve the offering of the OliveOil
community. I know we have quite a fine group of people on board. I thought
about the following and thanks to the blessings of the advisory board, I would
like to hear your comments and maybe some volunteers stepping up to the task:

The Proposal: If we have a writer(s) about olives or olive oil on OliveOil, I
would like to invite him/her to write a book and publish it weekly, maybe a
chapter or section a week, exclusively on our list?

I hope there are a number of people who would willingly (with knowledge) devote
an hour to a dissertation.
How about a chapter each, from people in different fields? A lot of books seem
to be put together like this these days.

You can either send your feedback to the group, or to me privately if you wish.
I would like this to be an organized project, if you have any proposal on how to
organize it, please let me know.

Thanks in advance to all.

Best regards, Sadoun

<pre>Sadoun,

Perhaps a web page for the olive discussion group could be created (it
doesn't have to be fancy) where a monthly summary, gleaned from postings,
would be located. Hyperlink the summaries to specific categories and build a
body of information from selected postings.

There is already a great deal of solid information sitting in the discussion
group's cyber-archives so use it. Categorise the major topics and build up
a dossier/database from the existing information and add from new postings.

* Newcomers to the olive discussion group would immediately have a resource
for reference
* The collective wisdom on a subject previously discussed would be available
to all and would minimise repetition.
* A section listing members olive commercial interest i.e. growers,
picklers, pressers, distributors, outlets etc for all to use as a resource.
* Create links to all discussion group members existing web sites

That's a start anyway Sadoun.

Phil Bramley

A nice idea, but speaking as the author of a book on olive growing, my
publisher would have a fit if I gave away chapters free on the net! To
do a good job takes a lot of work - and most people will need to earn
some money from that.

Phil Bramley's idea of a web archive is much nearer the mark.

Are there any olive discussion members from Turkey that could facilitate a

This seems to me a good idea. Of course, each one should wirte about
something that he knows very well. The only problem I see is whether anyone
is interested in subject. For example, I can write about olive-tree
varieties identification by DNA, but my work in focused in a part of Spain.
Most varieties discused in this group are not considered in my work.

Second, we need an editor :-) For the non-english speaken people is not
easy to write long text in foreign language.

My two pence

eBook on OliveOil

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Dear All

Thank you for the overwhelming response for the ebook proposal. The majority of
the responses were in favor of this project and seem to have the interest in
pursuing it. I believe it will be a very useful and educational tool for the
members of this fine group.

The following members have volunteered to write:

Dr. Gonzalo Claros, Spain: olive-tree varieties identification by DNA.
Constantine Alexander, USA: about ?
Neville Burt, New Zealand: organic side of olives and Olive Oil
Cindi Nicholson, USA: culinary side of olive and olive oil
Dr. Stan Kailis, Australia: table olives and table olive products.

Thanks to the volunteers above for their contributions and their efforts in
sharing their knowledge with us. I certainly appreciate it. Please go ahead
and submit your writings to the list. I recommend that each writer submit their
professional work once every two weeks or every month. That will give the
chance to the other members to discuss the topic and add their input, and maybe
challenge the writer ;-).

The message subject field should have the topic name followed by a section
number between brackets, for example (Table Olives 1).

Cheers, Jamal Sadoun

P.S. Though, there were a couple of proposals on putting the discussion about
the ebook on a website by subject in lieu of this list, I believe, it is more
beneficial for the members to receive the messages via email than having to
visit a website and sign up every time to read a message or so. There are many
websites setup like that, but the traffic usually is very slow and people lose
interest quickly. Besides, I have been extremely busy lately and don't have the
time to edit every message that gets posted.
