The great seven branched candle stick in the original Temple in Jerusalem
used olive oil. This was the site of the famous miracle in which one day's
supply of olive oil lasted 8 days.

rather than candles.

<pre>Are there oil burning lamps available any where these days?
Perhaps there has been variations and improvements over the years but expect
the fundamentals have changed little.
I have someone interested in the atmosphere and image that an olive oil
burning lamp may create.

Any advise experience of those that work well with olive oil or sources
welcomed.....

Marco's pictures were interesting, thanks, the under story of red nets was
for harvest I assume?

Sure!
Our olives can be harvested from november to april because they have a wide
ripening period, so the nets are used to avoid a waste of olives, even if
"net olives" are a 2nd choice product. But we have a lot of wind, so with
the nets farmers don't loss all the product.
They are red because it's easier to see olives on them, but you can find
also black, orange, yellow and green nets. In the winter our hills are just
like the Arlequin suit

<pre>Dear Judith:

How is Darell Corti? I have not spoken to him for almost a year! He is
extremely knowledgable and I always send him samples of olive oils that I
consider importing to the US to get his opinion. You should persuade him to
join our group. I have great respect for his knowledge.

Best regards,

<pre>Dear Constantine,
The last time I spoke to Darrell was a few weeks ago and he sounded fine.
Alas, I do not think he uses a computer, or certainly did not when I asked
him some time ago. Maybe you can prevail on him to do this.
He helped me get started on my book and offered extremely valuable,
constructive criticism at many points in its evolution - a most impressive
man.
Sincerely
Judith

<pre>Dear all

Regarding the oil lamp. I am Greek Orthodox so olive lamps are in. We
have them in all our churches. I am sure if there is a Greek church near
you you can ask to have a look. regarding New Zealand, I did visit the
Greek churches in Wellington and PalmertsonNorth.

Alternatively you can make one yourself. This is my Grandmothers design,

Take a drinking glass
Fill 3/4 with tap water
Add olive oil - a little less than 1/4 so that oil is below the top of
the glass.
Get hold of some very thin metal - eg steel food can (Aluminium may
burn)
Press the metal flat and cut out a triangle -make some cork floats and
attatch at each corner. Jab a small hole in the middle.
make a wick with some string or cord - oil with the olive oil and pas
through the hole- make sure it is a snug fit.
Light the wick - if it works well the wikk turns to carbon above the
hole and the wick below feeds this carbonised tip with olive oil.
On our island Kastelorizzo my grandmother had a plant the produced a
biological form of this. Unfortunately I do not know the name of the
plant.

The lamp works well for several days. She used to use it as night light
as well as absorbing the holy powers.
