<pre>I am a new member of the group and I would like to congratulate all those
who contribute to making this site very informative. I am however very
confused about some of the text in www.megistioils.com which was referred to
the group by Alred Poulos.

In the section all about olive oil it states that "Less than 10% of olive
oil produced in the Mediterannean countries is extra virgin oil." Is this
true? I was lead to believe 50 to 60% is EVO. Can someone please help?

Regards

Ged Treanor.

<pre>Olive Week in Melbourne is now over and done with for another year. Quite
successful from our point of view as we picked up a First In Class
(Commercial Early Pressed from Season 2001) for the only oil we had ready.
Only a Silver - no Golds awarded, which only demonstrates that we all have a
lot to learn yet.

Another oil that became ready after closing date was our Black Harvest
Manzanillo which Judy Ridgway adjudged to be a superior oil to our winner
interestingly. The Early Harvest Verdale that we also have is just as good
as the one that gained Best Oil in SA last year.

Looks like being a promising season all in all, with the opportunity of
doing some fine blends.

Olive Business have also convinced the Royal Melbourne Show to have a
section on oils this year so prepare. It is held in September. Thanks
Simon.

<pre>Apologies. I forgot to list the results of the 1st batch of Manzanillos
last night.

NSW Ag tested a sample of the 1st batch. Solvent extraction standardised @
50% moisture 23.87% (as received was 19.9% @ 59.81 moisture %).

How the huge turnaround over 2 years has occurred is the subject of some
speculation. Age of trees?

On the second batch of Manzanillo done today, from olive stock sourced from
Sunraysia and now 8 years old, we achieved a smaller % (17% wxw) but from
fruit that was approx 90% coloured from green. Not a pure black harvest.
Oil was significantly different from previously mentioned run of 1.7 tonne.
More bite, more colour. These trees had a similar watering regime (none
since Easter and very little from above).

<pre>To clarify,

I am specifically wondering if it is realistic to assume that we
could import from Turkey high quality virgin olive oil for resale in
the United States. What would be the best channel of distribution for
approximately 40 tons of pure Turkish Oil. Are there advantages to
having the olive oil bottled in Turkey (i.e. import savings, tax
savings). Also, what are the import export regulations on olive oil
from Turkey, I have done a considerable amount of research on this,
but I would like to hear from someone who has experience in this
aspect of the industry.

Thank You,

Mike Hart

<pre>Hi all
We are starting to consider appropriate equipment for next seasons
harvest and would be interested in any comments about harvesters
available in Eastern Australia and suitable for young trees. We have
approx 1000 trees 4 yr old. This year hand harvesting fine but not as
they age! Any comments about ease of use/efficiency etc of hand held
or other smaller harvesters would be appreciated, as would help us
make an informed decision. Without using them its hard to go past
the salesmans patter.
Thanks
Caroline
