fog in Morocco
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>I don't think your problems, Saåd, can be attributed completely to fog and humidity. Certainly there is no shortage of both in Italy - particularly the central valleys of Tuscany and Umbria. What does the Ministry say? My contacts with them have been further south but there are many good advisers on olives who could perhaps help. Cheers Brian Chatterton. </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>Hello Brian I met some experts at the ministry. Especialy members of the ORMVAH (Haouz Regional Office for Agricultural Developpement) who gave me a lot of usefull advices. But they were a little bit sceptic about olive growing in Rabat, due to its situation on the Atlantic coast. That's why I ask about problems of humidity. <pre>Olives require - chilling in winter and a warm to hot (preferably dry summer). also adequate sunlight is required for flowering. If some of these factors are suboptimal then production is affected. If temperatures are too low ripening is impaired or fost damage occurs. Hail can damage fruit. Low temperatures will also affect growth. Low temperatures also can cause tissue damage allowing entry of microrganisms eg olive knot. For example trees that I have seen outside Rome, Florence and Perugia had varying degrees of olive knot - particularly Frantoio but also on Itrana varieties in particular.
