<pre>Oil quality including flavour depends on ¥ Variety ¥ Growing environment ¥ Maturation State ¥ Harvesting and post harvest handling ¥ Processing ¥ Storage Regarding the effect of irrigation - I have not come accross adefinitive paper on this. But there could be some out there on the topic. It is generally considered that oil from irrigated groves is mor "watery". I take this to meen less flavoursome - eg less phenolics and other aromatics. I have masters student who is studying the physiology and biochemistry of the olive fruit (WA Mission) with and without water. Therefore later I may have something more specific to say. If any one has more info please advise me of the reference. Stan Kailis </pre> </td></tr></table> |

Dear Stan and All, some time ago I read a report at http://www.arusia.umbria.it/ (only Italian version) about the infuence of the irrigation on the vegetative development of plants, on the production and the characteristics of fruits, on the photosynthesis and potential water in the leaf, on the carboidrati contents in the leaves and on the contents in chlorophyll of the leaves. To day it's raining and unfortunately I could not pick my olives, so, as irrigation topic is very interesting, I found some free time to translate it ... in a quick manner and probably in a bad English. Anyway the report was uploaded to the Files area of the OliveOil group and . You can access this file at the URL http://www.egroups.com/files/OliveOil/Members+Folders/inerbirrigen.htm I hope it will be helpful to you and to my olive growers colleagues. bye ----- AntonioÿGianno' janoant@tin.it http://www.geocities.com/janoant </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>Dear AntonioÿGianno' (Thanks) and all Since my last comments on irrigationa nad oil quality - I remember a paper was given at Bari recently. One of the outcomes was that there were less phenolics in the oil when the trees were irrigated. Dear Antonio - I have trouble gettig material if it ois not in the email. Could you please email your translation directly to me. I think the email can handle about 4 pages of text. Stan Stan </pre> </td></tr></table> |
