SALOME in an olive grove?

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Dear John Attwood:

Greetings.

We were interested to read your comments about Manzanillos and their
displeasure at a clay base. That has been our experience to some extent as
well. The oil didn't taste nice either. Maybe it was the clay, or just the
good old M. But we like the oil we have made from Paragons and Kalamatas
growing in the same soil.

By the way, before you selected cultivars at the outset, was there anything
in the advice you got that talked about preferred soils for different
varieties?

Have you heard of other growers with similar stories to yours, ie planting
one thing and finding another? A grower amongst several who have spoken to
us has suggested it could be useful for growers with similar stories to
talk to each other, or compile a list. Or maybe start a special club! What
do you think?

If you want to talk to us 'off air', our email address is above of course.

My goodness, a Seductive Salome possessing good big fruit and offering
wonderful eating! In an olive grove? 'I would like to see that,' as they
say in Aussie Rules promos down this way. Mind you, we could have a Salome
and not know, since our Pendulinas ain't Pendulinas and our UCs ain't UCs
and our Missions ain't Missions and many of our Corregiolas ain't
Corregiolas. And our oils ain't ...?

However, the Paragons, the Corregiolas we believe to be Corregiolas, and
the Kalamatas (ordinary and oil) seem content in our soil.

Good luck with your grove, John; no one-upmanship intended, but our
Manzanillos are about 150 per cent more than first planned.

Cheers.

Jenny Davidson and Ian Fraser
