<pre>Dear Fenn I am sure you are correct. There is much skullduggery going on in Oz with respect to olives (as well as grapes)! Have never seen the label however but shall keep a viligant eye. <pre>I don't have "figures" on American preferences of light vs extra virgin, but on the supermarket shelves, most of the olive oil is extra virgin. In a large supermarket chain here in Michigan, the shelf space allocated to olive oil has increased 3-4 fold over the last several years. Alan Friedman </pre> </td></tr></table> |

Re: Olivio
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Although most consumers in the UK probably recognise that Extra Virgin olive oil is "better than" olive oil, most probably don't know why. They would also be unlikely to distinguish between Extra Virgin and Fine Virgin olive oil. I suspect that the many people (especially in the US, I believe, but also now in UK) who buy the flavourless "Light Olive Oil" think that it's more healthy for them, when actually the opposite is true! In mediterranean countries I imagine awareness is much higher. Re: Re: Olivio
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>As a consumer (and a home cook) in the United States, I see that few people here are aware of the differences in olive oil. Most women here do not even use olive oil. Most women cook with vegetable or corn oils only - they will even use them for salad dressing. If you look at any of the "women's magazines" or cook books you will find few recipes that use olive oil in any form. Olive oil is considered a gourmet food item. After people have become accustom to the flavor of the vegetable oils they do not like the strong flavor of olive oil.
