Olives SA EVOO Results

Hello all,

Results of the 2004, Olives SA EVOO Competition and Table Olive
Competition are below.

This year, 108 olive oil entries were received for the 2004 OSA Extra
Virgin Olive Oil Show. Entry numbers were down from last year. This
may have been due to low yields widely reported by growers in SA this
year due to unfavourable climatic conditions at pollination and fruit
set.

This year, the organising committee consisted of Lisa Rowntree, Paul
Eblen and Susan Sweeney. Gail Sutherland collated entries and Neil
Sullivan and Jenny Guerin assisted in setting up the sensory laboratory.

Thanks to the dedicated group of judges who spent most of Sunday at the
Waite sensory laboratory assessing the oils. These were: AOA panel
members - Graham Jones, Zannie Flanagan, Chris Pegg, Mark Lloyd, Rosalie
Hassan, Andrew Yap and Colin Cooter. Guest judges were: Brian Miller,
Wendy Ambler, Ian Roy, and Jane Bentivoglio. Special thanks to Wendy,
Ian and Jane who came from interstate at their own cost. Head judge
Richard Gawel expertly assisted the judging panels in reaching their
decisions without being overly directive.

For the best commercial oil of show award, the four gold medal winners
were blind tasted by all the judges. One of the judges whose oil was in
the taste-off did not have his score included in the final result.

Only one oil was disqualified this year by being greater than 0.8% free
fatty acid. The oils were not assessed for faults prior to judging and
any oil scoring less than 10 points would be considered to have
organoleptic faults. Total score was out of 20 points with bronze medal
13-14.5, silver 15-16.5 and gold 17 points and over.
