Forecast Olive Oil prices end of 2008 /2009

Taken into consideration the US$ slide, worldwide commodities inflation, and the global recessions looming, do you forecast an increase or decrease in the price of olive oil for 2008/2009 production season?

If increasing, what is your estimated increase percentage? Why?

If dencreasing, what is your estimated dencrease percentage? Why?

I believe this year the price will go down. There has been a lot of investment in olive orchards in the past years, and this year many of these new orchard will go in to production. So there will be an increase in the offer wile the demand with the international crises will more or less stay the same.

I agree with Joćo Correia, the investment throughout emerging economies has been substantial over the past several years. Though consumption in traditional olive oil markets such as in greater Europe are likely not to change, the overall decline in price will be the partially result of a lesser demand within the US, where the market had been growing the fastest by volume. It will take producers a while to adjust their production levels to meet the lower demand; meanwhile the market will be heavy with inventory, thus pushing wholesale prices downward.
