Deer vs olive trees

Are you located in the US? And you say you are in the city limits? How
large of an area do you need to protect?
As you are finding out deer are tenacious and can ruin crops in a short
amount of time. Chances are if they are coming close to the city they don't
have much fear of humans, which is a big problem. There are some chemical
sprays out that are supposed to ward them off. Check with your local
agricultural agency or fish and game depts. I have also heard of using
human hair and urine. Fencing is about the best but you say its not
feasible in your situation. my relatives just wound up getting permits from
game warden and thinning the buggers out. I'll keep my ears open and post
anything I might come across.

This sounds interesting. Are you talking like using Oleander bushes around
a perimeter? I had a friend who said the deer ate his tomato and basil,
plant and all right down to the ground. I had heard of them eating the
tomato fruit but not the plant.

Do the Oleander bushes keep them away from things growing inside the
perimeter?

<pre>Phil,
I'm adding a caution about oleander bushes. If the leaves are ingested they
are toxic to livestock (eg. Horses, cattle, etc.) and also to children.

<pre>Hi
I am a grower in New Zealand and our local group of growers advises against
growing oleander near olives due to the chance of spreading "olive knot".
What are you thoughts on this?
