We have sprayed with Neem oil in the hope that the flovour may be offputting but what can we do about the eggs/larvae around the roots? Any ideas anyone. <pre>Dear Steve Thanks very much for the information, we'll try the "barrier method" and see how it goes. The only information in texts over here state that control is difficult and recommend hand picking the females off at night time when they are feeding and also the use of Otinem which is sprayed onto the soil and then the nematodes feed on the eggs/pupa. As we are attempting to go organic the foil or rock wool sound the way for us. Once again thank-you. <pre>Blake: We have done a considerable amount of work (primarily insecticides) trying to control Black Vine Weevil in the soil (i.e. larval and pupal stages). Nothing has been successful. Topical application to the adult population in the tree has also been disappointing although some tell of some success with Diazinon applied at night as a heavy, hand spray application to trunks and limbs. Other techniques claiming some control include a wide band of tin foil wrapped around the trunk (the weevils can't cross it) or the same with a band of sticky "tangle foot" on the tin foil. In the Bari area of Italy, we were shown a technique where the trunks were wrapped with a "rock wool" type material (somewhat like what's contained in batting but not really the same) - apparently the weevils try and cross this and get tangled in the fuzzy wool. Of course, keeping the "skirts" of the tree from touching the ground so access can only be up the trunk is essential with any of this. Steve Sibbett U.C. <pre>Blake: Let me know if any attempts help, especially the rock wool barrier (note, their rock wool barrier was about 6" - 8" wide and of a texture coarser that the wool contained in insulation bats). I haven't used the Italian technique yet so am operating on hear-say. But, it sounds logical. Steve Sibbett U.C.
