olive farming in New Zealand

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Hi,
I am german, 55, living in Tuscany, Italy on a farm with (among others) 3,5
hectares of olives (about 1000 trees planted in 1990, frantoio, leccino,
pendolino), procucing an excellent biological olive oil. We are thinking about
selling here and going to New Zealand because of the very boring burocracy in
Italy. I have never been in NZ, but I heard about how beautiful it is and that
the climate is so good and that there is very few burocracy. Of course before
that I would like to make a trip to see the country. And of course before that I
would like to know something about the conditions of living and farming in New
Zealand. Can anybody tell me about the prices of land, houses, machinery, trees
and the marketing of olive oil there? How are the conditions for growing olives
biologically, which diseases are frequent, do you have problems with the olive
fly (dacus olae) or other insects? Would there eventually be some olive farmer
willing to host me during my trip and have me work with him to share our
experiences? Of course it might take some time to settle everything, but it
would be nice to start now with contacts.
Best regards

FW: olive farming in New Zealand

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Edward,

That's a bit harsh!

Yes, we do have a lot of sheep, but as one of the few countries in the world
that is able to record positive nitrogen fixation we have to do something
with the grass growth, and tree growth, and vine growth. Our economy is
diversifying hugely now that we have woken up to the fact that the climate
is more Mediterranean (sp?) than like the British Isles. Although we are
one the largest dairy and sheep product exporters in the world we are
rapidly growing our horticultural industries. We are going for the premium,
niche ends of the market and less of the commodity products which could be
argued has always been the issue with our sheepmeat and wool industries.

We welcome Volker and others who are prepared to come to the end of the
world to help us grow diversified world class industries that are built off
our superb existing agricultural base combined with 'old world' knowledge
and expertise and seek to export highly differentiated end products back to
their 'source'. A bitloke 'coals to Newcastle' really.

So yes, 50 odd million sheep in a country of less than 4 million people can
be a bit overpowering but this is of the world's 'lifestyle' destinations.

Many thanks

<pre>Yep agreed. One sheep farmer (my neighbour) that I met briefly also
expressed interest in growing olives. So people are gradually diversifying I
am sure NZ will make a very significant contribution to the olive growing
industry in due course.
