Hi, So far most of us are familar with table olives and olive oil from Italy, spain, Israel and some other mediterranean countries. Perhaps emerging olive growing countries like Australia and New Zealand. Has anyone knowledge about olive production in the Arab countries (Syria, Jordon, Iraq, etc) and also China? Does China produce olive oil at all? I know they have been producing a kind of nice sweetened edible olive (in preserved form) since time immemorial, commonly know as "kana' amongst the Chinese and, which I have eaten quite a fair bit as a child. If they do, how significant is China's contribution to the olive growing industry?
Chew, Syria is listed as the 6th largest olive oil producing country in the world. They manage to do it through what I could only describe as 'cottage based' industry. I was not aware of any large processing plants in Syria but there may well have been some. I lived in Syria (recently) and olives and olive oil are a way of life. Breakfast is olive oil, olives and yoghurt. Not a traditional Aussie breakfast but a very tasty and healthy one! The oil in Syria - mostly hand picked - was delicious. Very green, very fresh and with a slight peppery taste at the back of the throat. I was not very interested in olive growing at the time so I am sorry I cannot tell you what type of olive trees were the predominant species. Most of the olive groves are north of Damascus, in and around the Lattakia/Aleppo and Turkish border region. It has been claimed that the olive originated in Syria and Cyprus.
Hello Souhair, I was looking for olive discussion group members from Syria and I went back over my e-mails and came up with your posting. I am planning to go back to Syria mid march of this year. Primarily I am going back with a friend to photograph Crusader and Arab castles ( a passion) but I would also like to make contact with people in the olive growing and processing business throughout Syria. Would you be able to help with any contacts and advice on where the best places to see (olives that is) would be. Many thanks. Phil Bramley Tanja Olives Australia

|
