Organic copper and boron sprays

I am an organic grower and need to make up a foliar copper spray.
What is the thinking on the best recipe at present. I was going to
use a Burgundy mixture (ie 5 g CuSo4 and 6 g NaHCO3 per litre).

Any better ideas?

What is the safest concentration for a foliar boron spray. I have
been making up a 0.1% solution of Solubor?

Cheers,

Steven Chaffer

Re: Organic copper and boron sprays

hi there Stephen
I have been adding 110gm of solubor/100litres water.
Am using premixed copper solution - more cost effective here in NZ.
kind regards

Re: Organic copper and boron sprays

Steve,
I am also an organic grower and thought that using a Burgundy mix (I thought it
was called a Bordeaux mix) was not organic. Can you use that mix and still be
organic? How do you procure the chemicals? Here in the US, Ortho is the largest
seller of pesticides. I have a hard time calling any of their products organic.

Thanks
Scott

Re: Organic copper and boron sprays

Dear Stephen,

Before you go spraying anything onto your trees you should have a look at
what chemicals you are legally allowed to use. The AOA website has the
information for Australia, and I'm sure most of the peak bodies in other
countries would have similar information available about what is legal and
illegal to use on olives. There isn't much point in spraying your preferred
chemical, only to find that the mill won't accept the fruit because you have
sprayed something you shouldn't have. I've never heard of Burgundy mixture,
but have heard of Bordeaux but have never uses it.

My preference is for Copper Oxychloride to control peacock spot and other
leaf spots, and to try to keep down the incidence of anthracnose. Bear in
mind that Copper is a heavy metal and stays in the food chain for quite a
while, so while there may not be a long with-holding period there can still
be a problem with copper residues in oil. I understand that some of the
organic grower bodies in Europe are thinking of banning Copper for this
reason, so if you intend to export (or are in Europe?) this may be an issue
in years to come.

Re: Organic copper and boron sprays

No! Copper and Boron are incompatible in many formulations. Try a jar test
before mixing up anything, but I have found that Copper Hydroxide does not
mix well with Boron, but cause them to drop out of solution and clog up the
spray tank. I found this out the hard way. It might work with Copper
Oxychloride but I have my doubts.

G'day Stephen,
I have just been reading through the site. I am interested in learning more about Olives as I have just started with a company as technical support for a seaweed product called BM 86. It contains Boron 2% and Moly 0.02%. I think this could be helpful.
Cheers Luke.
