<pre>Dear friend for a small scale farming we fertilize according to plant's needs by soil and leaf analysis However, a common formulation is NPK 20:20:20 or others, usually a tea spoon per litter given continuously in the irrigation water (known as fertigation) in the growth season Using organic soluble fertilizers is another story Ariel </pre> </td></tr></table> |

RE: fertilizer
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Hi Scott, There are a number of options open to you but to get water soluble organic NPK compounds is somewhat tricky. The notion of doing things organically is not simply to 'not use any chemicals' on the plants but to apply various inputs to enhance the soil. To build the soil is the primary focus of organic production - and of course a healthy soil will grow a healthy plant and be more resilient to adverse environmental conditions. With this in mind, has the soil been tested to determine its cation balance, its nutrient availability and its biological status? If not, this is a very good starting point before anything is applied. There is an independent laboratory in Melbourne very capable of performing these tests. Not-with-standing the above, water soluble organically approved inputs include liquid kelp and fish, soluble trace elements such as B, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Mo & Co (where soil or foliage testing has demonstrated a need) plus humic or fulvic acids and even certain other biologicals. This is not to make a simple question come up with a complicated and convoluted answer, but to demonstrate that apart from the obvious and immediate plant requirements, the soil trace elements, cations balance, base nutrient availability and biological status should be addressed. Base inputs for cation balance include lime, dolomite, potassium and sodium and can be applied as a solid to the ground or foliar on the trees (if an urgent plant need is identified.) Please feel free to discuss any of the above with a view to clarification. And remember, prevention is always better and easier than cure.
