Raising olives in Virginia

<pre>Hello, Philip Maro; Delighted to see a transplant to Virginia interested in
olives.
I recently
landed in central VA from Maryland and took a notion to grow olives. I looked
in on this group for a while but didn't meet any participants from US. I
recently
discovered the strong olive community in California, so we're getting a bit
closer to home.
I have a huge amount to learn before beginning this venture. Can anyone suggest
some books on the fundamentals of starting an olive grove?
The possibility of purchasing a property that might be compatible with olive
culture
just emerged. What characteristics should a property have for successful
olive cultivation?

Hi Florence:

Where in Central VA are you located? I am in Moneta (Smith Mountain Lake)
in SW VA about 30 miles SE of Roanoke. I'm not sure about growing olives in
VA since our climate goes below freezing in the winter. You have come to
the right place to find out for sure. There are alot of growers on the list
who can give you climate requirements. I know there are alot of
wineries/vineyards that have popped up in the last few years in VA. My
family in Franklin county were apple growers until a few years ago when
they could no longer make a profit. Talk to you soon.

Philip
