Bracken

<pre>The property is partially covered with low (10cm to 60cm) bracken. Any
ideas on how to remove it. Is there a spray or does one just plow it in.

Offer has been made on the land - 12.6 ha. We had a water diviner down
there last nigh. What a performance - fascinating. Had a go myself a
certainly got a strong showing. Interestingly I had gone there the day
before with a couple of wires made up out of fencing wire. Guess what -
he found the same spots I did and no I did not tell him my experience
until adter he had done his bit.
Where I had the two wires crossing gently, His wire whipped him around
the body when he approached the site.
Really quite amazing.
Anyway would appreciate anything anyone has experienced with bracken.

<pre>Andrew,

Depends on what your approach is. The quickest way to get rid of bracken is
by spraying it with "Grazon". It is specifically formulated for bracken.
However if you have blackberry use "BrushOff" because it works on both
plants.

If you prefer an organic approach, you can slash bracken at certain times of
the year, but you must go back over the bracken time and again until you
exhaust the extensive root/runner system under the ground.

As a general theory with most soils in Australia, plough the braken in as
there is a very strong chance that the soil will be poor and in need of
organic material. If it only grows bracken, it probably isn't very deep or
fertile.

Get a soil test done before and after, only about $80 from IAMA or whoever,
but the soil is the key to growing anything at all. I spent 2 years working
on my clay "soil" before planting olives, and now have one of the best
groves in the area.

As for the water diviner, yes you may find water, but watch out for the salt
levels. Anything over 1000 parts per million and you are asking for trouble.
