Hello, I received an invitation of join this list and of course did! Just wanted to say Hi to all the members and am looking forward to learning about oils. We don't grow them (find that interesting) just eat and cook with them. Think this list will be one of the more interesting.
Hello, This is the first message I post to this newsgroup, which I find very useful. I am interested in olive oil marketing. More specifically, I am making a research project on Marketing olive oil in the UK. At this point my knowledge of olive oil is at a general level, but for the next 3 months I am going to be working on the topic and I hope I can contribute to the group. Cheers, Roberto Garcia

|

Greetings Roberto! Are you in the UK at the moment? Or are you studying it from abroad with a view to marketing a product here? You have picked a difficult one; it is almost impossible to get good olive oil here (the best, IMHO, is also the cheapest, from Lidl, at GBP1.79 for 750 ml). You might think that makes the UK market an easy target for a good quality oil. I would like to think so too, but unfortunately it's not so simple. I am not sure if it is due to the ignorance of the customer, or the wish of the large supermarket chains to control what we consume, but good quality products from abroad are almost impossible to buy here. Would you believe, for instance, that we cannot buy mineral water with any taste? It is all so pure that the amount of salts left are negligible. We cannot buy something as simple as plain Fromage Frais (aka Fromage Blanc) in any size less than 500 ml (not very practical for lunch boxes!). People in Britain still say they prefer chocolate which has vegetable fat in it rather than cocoa butter, but if you do a taste test the cocoa butter wins every time. Many British people never use herbs in their cooking, let alone olive oil! As for garlic, they think that's just for foreigners! Britain has a long way to go in food education. You can't rely on the quality of your olive oil to win the British consumer, unfortunately.
