Olive oil in cancer prevention
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Dear Kirsten, Epidemiological evidence is beginning to mount for a role for olive oil, especially Extra Virgin Olive Oil in prevention of all cancers. The polyphenols in EVOO are potent antioxidants thought to quench cancer-forming free radicals. The EURAMIC study published in 1998 shows that the monounsaturated fats of olive oil may also be protective against breast cancer in humans, so that a mechanism other than that for the polyphenols exists. Another substance, squalene, also found in olive oil, has been shown to prevent colon cancer in rats. A paper published in Preventive Medicine 1997; 26(2): 181-90 reviews a number of studies in on the possible effects of olive oil in breast cancer prevention in humans . It concludes that, "With respect to breast cancer, there is converging evidence for a protective effect. although the data are not definitive." Hope this helps. RE: Olive oil in cancer prevention

<pre>Christine/Kirsten We have had seen some literature on the 'amazing' medical claims for olive leaf extract but there does not seem to be much comment on the medicinal properties of the olive leaf on this discussion group. At the moment we seem to be focussed on olives and frost and (de) pressing Manzanillo varieties. Dr Morton Walker's book "Olive Leaf Extract - Nature's Antibiotic" ISBN 1-57566-226-4 makes some strong claims for olive leaf extract. Among them are: . strengthens the body's immune system . prevents such viral diseases as HIV, Epstein Barr, Herpes and Influenza . alleviates sore throats, chronic sinusitis, skin disease and pneumonia . eliminates symptons of all types of infections, including yeast, fungal, bacterial, viral and other parasitic protozoan effectively treats chronic fatigue syndrome, athletes foot, arthritis, psoriasis - even the common cold. Is there anything this remarkable product can't do? Perhaps it might even solve the problem of Australia's Manzanillo oil content! Regards, Phil Bramley </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>Chrisitne, Sorry this is a late response to your message, but i was wondering if they mentioned topical applications at all? In Japan they believe that topical applications of Virgin Olive Oil after sun exposure can also protect against skin cancer. The theory is that the antioxidants mop up free radicals.(2000 The Independent) Another source claims that the unsaturated fatty acids in Virgin Olive Oil create a protective blanket that screens out UV rays, while the remaining unsaturated fatty acids which penetrate into the skin where they absorb UV rays. Does anyone else know of other sources which make these claims?
