<pre>Dear Friends: Here is another interesting piece on the potential health benefits of olive oil. I hope you enjoy it. Best regards, Constantine ITHACA, N.Y., Aug. 25, 2000/ -- A long-term health study has shown that Vitamin E and Vitamin C supplements have a "significant protective effect" against memory problems and loss of mental alertness, according to a Cornell University medical publication. The university's "Food and Fitness Advisor," published by Cornell's Weill Medical College and its Center for Women's Healthcare, cited the recent study on Vitamin E and Vitamin C supplements as providing a key way to protect memory. The study, published in the journal Neurology, found that the two vitamin supplements protect against "vascular dementia," or loss of cognitive function due to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. "What's more," the Cornell publication reported, "among the study participants without dementia, those who took vitamin C or E performed significantly better on cognitive tests than did participants who did not take the supplements." The health newsletter listed antioxidant protection as one of the l0 best ways to protect memory. "Antioxidant nutrients such as Vitamins C and E help protect brain cells from free radicals, the toxic byproducts of oxidation," it said. Other research, in its early stages, has suggested that Vitamin E may "slow progression of functional decline in patients with moderately advanced Alzheimer's disease," the health letter reported, Among the "l0 ways to protect your memory," the Cornell publication cited in addition to antioxidant Vitamin E and Vitamin C supplements, a low-fat diet, physical activity, ongoing mental stimulation, stress reduction, B vitamins, fish and olive oil, ginkgo biloba, estrogen, and "good relationships." __________________________________________________ ______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>Dear Friends: Another piece of interesting news this time coming from the Daily "El Mundo" in Spain. The way I read the news they are two interesting parts. One is that of the aid program and amount. The second is that part of the aid is for the first time directed to improving olive oil quality for our Spanish producers. I hope you enjoy this. Best regards, Constantine Alexander EL MUNDO (SPAIN): RECORD AID FOR SPANISH OLIVE OIL (AYUDA RECORD PARA EL OLIVAR) The EU Olive Oil Management Committee has set at Pta189 per kilo the aid which Spanish farmers will receive the 1998/99 season, when production totalled 899,991 tons. The sector will receive a record Pta170.335bn in aid. Under the previous system, according to official sources, farmers would have received Pta29bn less, with aid per kilo calculated at Pta161.87. Of the aid figure set, 1.4 per cent will be used to finance a quality improvement programme, with farmers receiving Pta186 per kilo net. __________________________________________________ ______________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com </pre> </td></tr></table> |
