Healthy oil

<pre>Keith,

How long is a piece of string? What claims have been made for olive
oil that are now being disputed? A major problem in all these discussions
is that all olive oil is not the same - it is not a chemical but a natural
product that varies considerably from climate to climate and variety to
variety. The proportions of different oils, the level of anti-oxidants and
heaps of other things. It surprises me how often sweeping statements are
made about olive oil without taking any account of the quality.

<pre>Dear Brian Chatterton,
According to my knowledge and the last studies on the
health qualities of olive oil, what's mainly count are
the qualities of the oil (organoleptic - no negative
attributes, acidity and peroxide) and not the
Geographical conditions and varieties.
Can you please refer to studies that proves otherwise?
Thanks David

I'm guessing that it has to do with a recent report that suggests that too
much fat of any kind, animal or vegetable, can impair the brain, especially
in children and adolescents (this from memory).

Well, too much of anything is harmful, but since a healthy diet must include
fats, you might as well make it the most healthy type. Here olive oil is
tops. I guess that if 50% of your calories comes from olive oil, it's
probably excessive.

The brain is one big fat bubble - yes!! and the Medical Profession are
questioning the fat-free diets ( which came into vogue in the 1960's) run a
parallel course along side Alzheimers Disease( which increased dramatically
from the 1960's onwards)

As for us, yes we will benefit from the increase of the good HDL's and
decrease of LDL cholesterol and the anti-oxidants with a diet including
extra virgin olive oil.
However, it is our children and their children and so on who will inherit
the benefits from a lifestyle of consuming extra virgin olive oil all their
life!

<pre>I am new to this site. A wholistic health practitioner. Good discussion
on healthy oils.
For those who have not seen his books, I'd like to mention Udo Erasmus.
The guy is a walking encycolpedia on the health qualities of oils. His first
book was "Fats And Oils." The new one is "Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill."
Excellent. Life-saving reading. Be sure to read the section on Dr. Budwig
and flax oil.
Dr. Johannah Budwig has one book that I know of available in English.
Long title that begins "Flax Oil..." I found it as a booklet in an American
natural food store. Her brilliant work and strong spirit are responsible for
the improvement of many lives. Also the literal saving of many. Many who
were literally just days from death of cancer are now alive and well.

Dear Shivani,

I agree with you that Udo Erasmus book is very useful for those who know
little about oils and fats. My main concern is that, by the time any
ordinary person reads the book they will live in fear and dread of
consuming any fats that have undergone any process other than cold
pressing, preferably under an atmosphere of an inert gas such as nitrogen
to block the process of oxidation. This is fine except it is not very
practical. In my view, there is a place for refining of oil, provided the
conditions are such that chemical changes are kept to a minimum. After
all, refining removes unesterified fatty acids (ie the acidity in an oil),
pesticides, and off odours and smells. It can convert an inedible oil into
edible one although I am not sure that Udo would agree with this statement.

In relation to your comments about Dr. Budwig, I would be interested to
know whether any of her work has been published in peer-reviewed medical or
scientific journals, and also whether any clinical trials on numbers of
patients have been undertaken and the results published. A number of people
cite her work as evidence for the beneficial properties of flax seed oil.
However, they mostly refer to her books which, as far as I am aware, are
not peer reviewed. When I searched under Budwig in Medline, I could not
find any papers with her name on them supporting the health benefits of
flax seed. If you have any such information, please let me know. Of
course, even if her work is not published in medical journals, it does not
necessarily mean that her conclusions are not valid. However, I for one,
and no doubt others as well, would be more easily convinced. Unfortunately,
my research background has converted me into a sceptic!

<pre>Well said Jane,

There is a lot of miss information and half truths around promoted by vested
interests and people with not a deep understanding of biology. A little bit
of fact can be dangerous out of context so we all need to be aware that
everything written is not gospel.

<pre>Oil press

I would like to have an oil press built locally for doing small batches of
varietal oils and also hazelnut oil. (We grow both olives and hazel nuts)

If anyone has non-copyright (or copyright, happy to negotiate with the IP
owner) design/engineering drawings for a mill, malaxer, press (stainless
steel mats) and separator (or centrifuge) I would like to hear from them so
I can arrange to see the designs.
