water jacket on oliomio 100
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>--- mstarcza@urrbraehs.sa.edu.au http://www.urrbraehs.sa.edu.au/ I am now running the oliomio100 at Urrbrae high school in Adelaide. While I am now getting acceptable extraction figures (thanks Peter) I am reading about the heating of the paste in the malaxer and wondering. Has anyone with a non waterjacket olimio found a safe/neat way to heat the malaxer in a regulated way? I am using a reverse cycle airconditioner to heat the air but as its about 14 degrees at the moment its a bit of a shock when i walk outside the press room wearing shorts/thongs and a Tshirt. Re: water jacket on oliomio 100

<pre>I operate an Oliomio 100 and an Oliomio 250. Our season is now fast approaching its end so I have time to add my comments. I used small fan heaters mounted on angled supports to blow hot air onto the underside of the first mixer bowls to assist with raising the temperature of the paste. Dependant on the degree of wetness of the paste in this mixer bowl I normally controlled the temperature to 22 - 23 degrees C. If the paste was quite dry, the mixing action alone would raise the temperature. If the paste was moderately wet I used the heater/s to raise the temperature and if the paste was really wet (Manzanillo/Barnea) nothing I did could help. Through the second mixer and the decanter the temperature rose about 2 - 3 degrees on the 100kg/hr machine. With the 250kg/hr machine - once it had been running for a couple of hours it was common for the temperature to rise 4 degrees through the decanter alone due to residual heat under the covers and we had to be careful not to heat the paste in the first mixer above 22 degrees. While we always tried to limit the temperature of the oil outlet to 25 degrees it was not unusual to reach 27/28 degrees and there were times, when the paste was extremely dry with low oil content, when the oil temperature reached 32 degrees. I also maintained the press room temperature at 20 degrees throughout the season using a reverse cycle air conditioning unit. <pre>Matt I am sure that the Big A from OA will inform you that you can buy water jackets for the Oliomio now. D/K the cost. For the first years I used a Jetfire heater - an industrial gas fired heater - to raise the ambient temp. Very hit and miss but it worked usually. I also found that once the oil started running (at say 20C paste temp) it just kept on running even if the temp fell.
