Size of press for a 2500 tree grove
I am seeking advice before committing to buying or leasing a press next year. We have an organic grove of 2500 trees which are just coming into production and for various reasons would like to be independent of outside presses. A 200 kg/hr unit has been suggested. Do you think this would be large enough? Has anyone had good experiences with particular makes of press? (Or conversely, bad experiences, though I don't want to be the start of any negativity towards any manufacturers) I would be most grateful for your opinions. Regards, Judith Williams (chloeb)

A press is the old way of extracting olive oil. Now, most modern plants use the decanter (centrifuge) to separate the solids from the liquid.
I suggest you should do ROI analysis. 2500 trees are not alot to dedicate a whole extracting line for. If you buy, I would suggest that you also consider processing olives for your neighbors and other farmers. That way, it becomes a more viable economically. Where are you located? There are now many brands available.

Processing my olives
Thanks for your feedback Sadoun. When I said 'press' I should have said extraction method. I wasn't thinking of an old fashioned press, but of one of the newer methods. I appreciate that it is not really an economic decision, putting in a plant to produce oil for a relatively small grove, but in Western Australia there are only a few processors who do pressing for outside customers, and they are geographically dispersed. Even rarer are organically certified processors. for me to put 'certified organic' on my labels, I have to use an approved press. I have had good advice from a local grower, and now need to look at the finances! Regards, Judith (chloeb)

Hi Judith
Check your estimated olive production volume and harvest duration. BAsed on that, you can estimate the mill capacity required for processing your olives. If a processor is not near you, then you maybe forced to own your private extraction equipment.
