<pre>Sergi, << I have no idea which States of USA are the top consumers and producers of olive oil. >> California accounts for 95% of all olives grown in the US for any reason, table or oil. And based on population alone, we are the largest state, so it's no surprise that we also account for a larger amount of consumption of same than any other state. If there's any more info I can look up for you, let me know! Best regards, Antony </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre><< In actuality, the metro region of New York City has a per capita consumption of in excess of four times the national average making it the largest consumption market in the US. Both San Francisco (#5) and LA are in the top ten markets so perhaps California as a state might rank ahead of Metro New York but I would have to check the figures. >> d, Agreed about metro areas. I was just looking at state figures, which I could get for you, if I can find them again. <G> We have millions more people in CA, so I had thought that accounted for the difference in consumption. But again, I'll have to look it up again. << While it may be true that California produces the most olive oil, it pales in comparison to the 165,000 metric tons that are imported into the US last year. California's share of the total US market is still quite tiny in overall consumption figures. The only other state producing olive oil that I know of is Texas. >> Oh yeah...the oil production here is somewhere about .2% of the world's output. One fifth of one percent is pretty insignificant, IMO. <G> Where we make a splash on the radar screen is in table olives, with somewhere about 13%, according to U.C. Davis. But what we lack in quantity, we're making up for in quality. We're finally starting to win gold medals in Italy itself for some of our gourmet olive oils. I like to think it's a harbringer of things to come...not unlike when California wines started competing with French wines 30 years ago. Now, we have VERY significant sales, worldwide. Hmmm....quite a few similarities between CA and Australia. I've never done a comparison of our respective climates, but they should have some very similar characteristics, given that we're having similar agricultural output. Best regards, Antony </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>d, Do you have statistical data for state/regional consumption in the USA that you can share with the group or off-line. If you have some raw data, send it to me and I will create a table and graphs to present to the group. I have seen some figures in the past were New York accounts for about 45% of the overall olive oil consumption in the states. From the turn of the last century, Italian-Americans from New York were the first importers. <pre>Anthony FYI the IOOC Table Olive Committee has given the table olive production of the USA (% of world output) as about 6% for 1998/1999 and about 9% for 1999/2000. The total production has remained virtually static over this period, so your increase has compensated for a decrease elsewhere. I couldn't believe the figures when I saw them, as 13% sounded way off the mark. Do you perhaps know what proportion of the US table crop is hand-harvested these days? After reading your data, I went back and looked at my sources. Seems I should have looked closer. It was over 10 years old. MANY apologies. On the other hand, we're currently up to a whopping ** 1% ** of the world olive oil market. <laughing> Hey... a decade ago, it was .1 percent. If this keeps up, in another 7301 years, we'll be a leader. <joke> Thank you, Guido, for correcting me. And my sincere apologies for spouting old data at this list. <pre>Guido: I believe more than 85% of the table olives in the US (California and AZ) are still hand harvested. The harvesting machines being developed for our industry (not shakers, we 1) can't get good removal from Manzanillo - to "willowy"; and 2)we injure fruit) are still simply that - in the development stage. These are machines with rotating tines that move along the sides of the tree. Tree shaping, machine weight and flexibility, ability to move in sometimes wet ground, and fruit collection are still areas where improvement is needed. Prototypes will be in the field working this fall to work these problems out. Once we refine this process, a substantial increase in machine harvesting will occur. Steve Sibbett U.C. <pre>Sergi, California produces about the only olive oil in the USA. Texas has a tiny percentage and Arizona is just coming online. Try the OliveMerchant.com (they also happen to carry our oil... Stella Cadente EVOO). For even more info, contact the University of California at Davis to get the full scoop or the California Olive Oil Council at www.cooc.com.
