I know not what previous farmers may have done to your soil but ploughing
back in the "waste" from oil production may be beneficial. Our analysis
shows that the "waste" is high in Boron which is needed by olive trees but
so often forgotten by the grower. The "waste" is also rich in other
nutrients - do your own analysis and see.

That which is left after the extraction of oil by a 2 phase system, in my
case a Pieralisi Fattoria. "Waste" of course is a misnomer - it really is
another product waiting to be developed, it's just that we don't have a lot
of it at the moment.

<pre>In my ethnographic studies of traditional olive oil processing and uses of
processing wastes, putting the wastes back into the orchards, either after
pressing or after burning the waste (using the ash as fertilizer), is a
common practice. Sources warned me not to pack the waste around the trees
however, as it "heated" up and could burn the roots.

<pre>I'm fairly new to this group so I apologise in advance if this topic has
been discussed in great detail before. I am converting to organic farming
methods. What effect will this have on my oil yield? I believe it means that
I will have to pick at the earliest opportunity to avoid the olive fly, at a
time before the oil content is at its highest - is this correct? What kind
of oil return per kilo fruit (for the leccino cultivar) am I likely to get?
What other such considerations need to be made for organic farming? Thank
you for your help in advance, and I again apologies if this specific topic
has been discussed ad nauseam!
