I have already pointed Kerry at the archives, and addressed the potential for
much help from local suppliers and associations, so please don't go there again.
However, Please assist a newbie to get up and running.

<pre>Hu anyone !

Jamie and I are farming in Zimbabwe under very difficult conditions waiting
to be thrown off our farm without compensation at any given moment - we are
told that this could be sooner than we think!!. However we continue to
farm in the hopes that the Foreign currency earnings will make our move to
Aussie more viable if we do it at all. We have to be there by April 2005.
Time is rushing past and we have to have some advice on what we might be
interested in.

We visited Mike Meredith in Riebeek Kasteel in the Western Cape recently who
gave us this Website and email address. We were extremely interested in what
he is doing on the Processing side of the Olives which would be our interest
in Australia and still keeps us in the Farming World. At our Age we would
not be able to start growing new Trees and would have to get an established
Olive Farm - or simply do what Mike is doing buying the Olives once a year
to process.

Is there anyone in Australia or New Zealand who can advise and what are our
chances of getting into this, what would be the costs involved, what would
we need etc., etc.,

Many thanks.

Dear Linda,

Getting in to the processing side without growing any trees is probably
quite a wise move, as Australia underwent a major planting boom about 8 - 10
years ago and the trees are now starting to produce crops. Within the next
few years there could well be a shortage of processing facilities, certainly
in my area (Hunter Valley, 2 hours north of Sydney) and quite likely in
several other areas where the groves are more "lifestyle" oriented plantings
of 1000 or so trees, rather than the bigger, more commercially oriented
groves with 20,000+ trees.

First decide where you want to live, as olives are grown in all states of
Australia. Then have a look at some of the websites such as
www.australianolives.com.au the website of the AOA, as they have plenty of
information about equipment manufacturers. Good luck!

Regards,
