Eucalyptus mulch

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Hi,
We're just about to plant some olive trees. In the process of preparation we
have
removed a couple of eucalyptus trees. The guy who cut them just piled all of
the
branches on the brush pile. We are planning to shred the brush pile and use the
mulch on the new olive trees. We have heard that eucalyptus mulch can kill some
plants or stunt their growth, so I'm wondering if we should separate them. They
will
probably be less than 10% of the mulch. Will they be a problem at that level?
With
all of the Australians in this group, I figured someone must know about this.
Thanks in advance!

The Eucalyptus mulch is excellent; have it processed asap to utilise
sap moisture and heaped up for as long as possible to compost. There
may be some minor change in soil pH, you can counter this with a
handful of superfine lime per plant. Place it 100mm deep and 1000mm
diameter mininum.

Do they have eucalyptus in France, too? That is unfortunate. They are a

problem here in California, and a bad fire hazard.
Thank you for your advice.

are they really *a problem*?

i mean, what tree is *not* a fire hazard?

eucalypts are a beautiful tree imo.

And Pinus are a FAR worse hazard because of the oils and cones!
Especially when they are planted in bloody great blocks on the
mountains where Eucs used to live!

Eucalyptus are beautiful trees, and they grow well here, and they propagate
very
well by seed, which is why they are a problem. They are an Australian tree and
don't
really belong here. They tend to create their own habitat as they grow and
spread,
and that displaces our own native habitat which is under enough pressure from
urban
sprawl as it is. And that habitat tends to spread wildfires.
As for fire hazard, yes, all trees can burn, but eucalyptus are very oily and
burn
particularly well. Having them near your house is just asking for trouble when
brush
fires come. Some other trees are just as bad, but I didn't mention them because
we
were talking about eucalyptus. Our native oaks are very resistant to fire.

I always get a chuckle when in some hollywood production a couple of
gum (eucalypts) trees appear. Where's the koala? Same as in the
dreadful Bob-Hope-in-africa pic "call me bwana"; all the close ups had
him chopping his way thru the jungle - of olive branches!

Can you believe it?
