Olive Tree propagation
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Hi, Is there anyone out there that can pass on useful information regarding the propagation of olive trees. I plan to propagate oil varieties, using a greenhouse/tunnel. Have been advised to use heating coils in the soil with a misting system. If anyone has information on systems they have used successfully, please post a message - I would like to communicate with you. Thanks Jean </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>Jean, To propagate olive trees in the past we have used a large plastic covered tray of perlite mix with base heating element and a misting system which uses a s/steel leaf and switch set up to mist spray for 10-20sec as needed by evaporation and transpiration of the cuttings. Set ups such as this can usually be source from specialist Horticultural suppliers- a good nursery may also be able to point you in the right direction. You will need to treat the cuttings with a rooting gel suitable for hard cuttings to help them strike. Cuttings may need up to 12 weeks in this environment to achieve viable roots. You will need to then pot out and keep in a glasshouse or similar for 12-18 months and then slowly acclimatise them under shade cloth until they have hardened off enough to plant out. It is a slow process and heatbreaking if, as we experienced, you have 1200 cuttings almost ready for the first pot out when ETSA decides to cut off the electricity for 7 hours on a 40 degree day ( We lost the entire 1200) If you are serious about propagation I recommend you get hold of 'Plant Propagation - principles and practices' by Hartmann, Kester, Davies & Geneve - it is probably the most comprehensive publication available on propagating. It doesn't have a huge amount about olives specifically but is a very comprehensive manual to refer to. <pre>Thanks Helen for the info. I have basically been assured that building special beds in the tunnel, using straight perlite, with heating coils and a misting system is the best way to go. Just needed confirmation that I am on the right track! What cultivars have you propagated, and which were the most successful? Did you treat with a fungicide, and is so, at what stage. Did you use a fan for ventilation, or how did you control temperature? Mid-summer here reaches the 40 degree range, and I am wondering how I am going to keep the temp down in the tunnel? Have ordered a new book which was launched this month in Australia called "Olive Propagation Manual" - hoping that it will give even more information. Anyway, thanks for taking the time and trouble to mail me. Much appreciated. Keep in touch.
