Cultivar question
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>My 250 Sevillano [planted 1998] have finally fruited. Supplied by Olives Australia, I find that 50% of trees are some other variety, small, later ripening fruit just to make things worse! I presume other people have had this experience and if so, what did you do? The leaf is somewhat similar to the Sevillano and not like any other varieties I have planted . Dear Don, The best person to ask would be Susan Sweeney at the Waite Institute in SA : sweeney.susan@... as she is running the NOVA research into varieties. Good luck! RE: Cultivar question
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Don, I have had exactly the same experience with grafted trees from Olives Australia [supposedly Sevillanos], planted 1998. Last year I queried the accuracy of the variety, on a posting with this group, but no one indicated they had a similar experience. Mike Wilson described some characteristics of the true Sevillano and as there were some common aspects I put the differences down to the drought, the first fruiting and my management of an irrigation regime. It is a bitter/sweet comfort to find someone else has found a similar situation. My fruit is about the size of Frantoio and slightly purple in colour when ripe, matures later than others who have [true] Sevillanos, with the tree foliage rather dense and dark in colour. I have no idea what the variety is but would like to know. I am intending to press the small amount of fruit separately to see what the yield and oil taste is like. If anyone has further information about this situation I would value your input. <pre>Alan, Did you attempt to contact Olives Australia?. Clearly we have been sold a faulty product. Half my trees have large fruit similar to Hardy Mammoth but the remainder are about the size of Nevadillo but with a leaf similar to Sevillano. My email address is dgrimes@... if anyone else has this problem. No need to bother the group! Cultivar question
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Brian, your answer to Jason's message reveals a good expertise concerning olive trees of central Italy. I have a little oliveto since a few months. It is located on the hills (450m./s.l.) midway between Todi and Perugia and I would like to extend the grove planting more olive trees till an overall extent of four hectares. The olives should be for the table and for E.V. olive oil. May I have a suggestion about the mixture of varieties, the row spacing, the pruning , the farming method, the harvesting and any other consideration that may be usefull? Thank you. Re: Cultivar question

<pre>Marcello, by your description i presume you're located in the Colli Martani sub-zone of the PDO. Being in Umbria you should base your grove on "Frantoio" and "Moraiolo" in order to have a nice high quality oil full of character, and if you want to have some table olives i recommend "Ascolana tenera". You can also use as secondary cultivars for oil production "Orbetana" and "Nostrale di Rigali", booth very resistant to low temperatures and producing high quality oils (the "Nostrale" harvest should be anticipated because it's very sensitive to olive fly). But, and here is the downside, with a olive grove with these varieties you should pay a close attention to olive-knot (rogna) a peacock-spot (occhio di pavone). As for planting 5x5 or 6x6 open-vase leaving a 1.2m trunk to allow mechanical harvest. You can find out more about Umbrian cultivars by going to the ARUSIA (Agenzia Regionale Umbra per lo Svilupo e l'Innovazione in Agricoltura - www.arusia.umbria.it - via Mario Angeloni 63 PG). They have a few books that might interest you (i think their free): * VarietÃ* di Olivo in Umbria * Caratteristiche dei frutti e dell'olio di germoplasma olivicolo in Umbria * Tecniche per lo sviluppo dell'olivicoltura in Umbria * Indicazioni per il miglioramento qualitativo e la valorizzazione della produzione olivicola in Umbria Saluti, João Correia On 3 Jul, 2005, at 11:48, Le Dolci Tradizioni wrote: > Brian, > > your answer to Jason's message reveals a good expertise concerning > olive > trees of central Italy. > > I have a little oliveto since a few months.
