<pre>Hi there Anthony
I am not certain what your climate is like there but our experiences in the
Northern 1/2 of NZ and in particular the area North of Auckland is the
following:
1) if you have consistent humidity above 70% for any period of time (longer than
3- 4 weeks) in late summer and autumn
2) if you don't have a reasonable period of days with a steady minimum temp of
less than 9 degrees celsius during winter
DON'T plant them.
I cannot think of a CV that has been so unsuccesful in our area - they suffered
massive tip die back, have never produced much fruit at all (if at all) and
generally have been a disaster. That is not to say that they aren't producing
well in other areas it's just that they are NBG here in Northland.

Another reason to ensure you do your homework thoroughly before buying a single
tree.
Good luck with your project
regards
John Bishop

Barnea

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>When I wrote my book on olives a few years ago I was very critical of
Barnea. I coined the phrase "bland Barnea" which caused considerable
hostility among the leaders of the NZ olive industry who were very
pro-Barnea at the time. Other congratulated me on saying what they had not
dared.

Since then I have revised my opinion as I have tasted some Barnea oils
that are certainly not bland but I still think they tend to be unbalanced.
Maybe they will improve when the trees are older and growers have more
experience.

It is however a risk as Barnea is an recently invented variety and
growers cannot tap into an existing body of knowledge. I think I am right in
saying that more Barnea is grown in Australia and NZ than anywhere else in
the world.

There is of course a market for bland low acid oil. Not everyone likes
the strong spicey oils that are produced in central Italy. Barnea was
promoted as the wonder tree with incredibly high yields. That has not been
the experience of grower I know in NZ. They have been dogged with
pollination problems and some have yet to harvest a single fruit after 12
years.

For Australian and NZ growers with so many unknown factors such as soil,
climate and management it seems pointless to add another risk. Using
varieties with established reputations for the production of quality oil
takes one risk out of the equation.

Cheers Brian Chatterton.

Re: Barnea

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>There are no super varieties, every variety has it's strong points and weak
points. We are working closely with many growers from different areas of
Australia. We work in the groves and processing plants of these growers and so
have the benefit of a huge amount of varied hands on experience. We also
operate a large commercial olive nursery and thus have completed and are
continuing to research varietal performance in different areas.

To date we have found that the two most productive varieties in well managed
Australian groves that we are working with are Picual and Barnea. Both
varieties have produced some exceptional award wining oils and have importantly
generated some early income for growers and investors. The character of Barnea
oil is certainly influenced by the time of harvest to a greater extend than some
other varieties. It is widely known that Barnea requires cross pollination but
local applied research has provided us with the identity of the most suitable
pollinators to use in specific areas and so this risk should be no greater than
with any other self incompatible variety. Its fruit size has meant it has
responded well to mechanical harvesting which is imperative to our industry.

Other varieties such as Coratina and Arbequina are also showing very encouraging
early production tendencies. Frantoio and Leccino have been widely planted in
Australia and have performed well in some areas and have been disappointing in
other areas.

There are many things to consider when selecting varieties and prospective
growers should seek out as much informed and factual information as they can,
especially from their local area.

Re: BARNEA

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>John and Christa
We are situated approx. 60km south west of Sydney.
As such humidity can be an issue but by careful pruning and mangement of the
canopy fungal diseases can be minimised.
Our seasons used to be some rain in winter and summer storms in December January
but the last couple of years our climate appears to have moved towards the
classic mediterranean one of wet winters and dry summers. In 2004 it is all
bloody dry!!!
Our normal rainfall is 550 to 600mm and we have a clay loam soil down to approx.
900mm before a heavier clay kicks in. This heavier clay layer has proved to be
advantageous as during irrigating the flow of water from the drippers becomes
more lateral once it hits the clay.
We have used manzanillo as a cross pollinator and 1 row in 5 certainly gave us a
heavier crop this year then the grove planted 1 in 10. That maybe an isolated
case however and we will monitor it this year to see if that result is
replicated.

David Wilson
