Dual purpose olives

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Some three years ago at Blenheim in NZ we said to growers that it
was doubtful whether there were any true dual purpose varieties. This was
regarded as some old fashioned Italian ideas.
The recent experience with Manzanillo seems to confirm the point
although the result are much much worse than we ever anticipated. When
asked by growers in NZ what we would recommend we said pull them all out
before you waste any more money on them.
We were not surprised when the advice was ignored - but what else
is there to do? The quicker it is done the less time and money that is
wasted.
While it is necessary to experiment in Australia and NZ a good
starting point would be the classic oil varieties rather than unproven
ones.

Cheers Brian Chatterton.
