<pre>While perusing old copies of Olive Grower (published by Olives Australia) I came upon the following referring to a field excursion in September 1998 written by one A Burgess (formerly of Olives Australia):- "Our first grove visit was to the well known Mildura Trial Plot. Paul McClure guided us around the 14 variety grove that was planted in 1964 when there was an interest in establishing a table olive industry. It was fascinating to see the size and shape of the fruit and the trees, many of which we had planted ourselves." Establishing a "table" industry? Manzanillo's (de Sevilla?) at this grove recorded the highest yields per tree in excess of 49kgs/tree at 7 years of age. It is of more than passing interest that a table olive industry was being contemplated, not an oil one! A Burgess now works for Marlborough Olive Nursery ( m.olive@hccs.com.au ) as General Manager (Boundary Bend enterprises/investments) and now does not vouchsafe the M as a goer in the oil market. Mind you Andrew does like the bland Barnea but that's another story. Regards [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>Dear Peter, as interesting as your information is, might I point out that Barnea is actually just called "Barnea", not "bland Barnea" as mentioned. The power of suggestion is a mighty tool, but maybe a person who is "theoretically" in the know should just stick to referring to the cultivar by its assigned name and leave the adjectives to others personal opinions. Just a thought! -----Original Message----- From: P Caird <caird@hitech.net.au> To: OliveOil@egroups.com <OliveOil@egroups.com> Date: Tuesday, 6 June 2000 11:44 pm Subject: [OliveOil] Extract >While perusing old copies of Olive Grower (published by Olives Australia) I came upon the following referring to a field excursion in September 1998 written by one A Burgess (formerly of Olives Australia):- > >"Our first grove visit was to the well known Mildura Trial Plot.
