Olive Oil in Adelaide - History
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Hi to All, There is some family history here about olive oil in Adelaide. My late mother mentioned that there was an olive press in Waymouth Street near West Terrace. She mentioned that they used to burn oil pressing residue cake (pomace) in the stoves for fuel (before gas and electricity was widespread) and I suspect that was in the Depression years (certainly prior to 1935). I'm not certain but I suspect that it was connected to my maternal grandfather who migrated to Australia prior to WW1 and was a partner with his brother-in-law in Star Grocery, the largest continental food store in Adelaide in Hindley Street. The location of the press was within one city block of the first Greek Orthodox Church in Adelaide. Guess I'll need to ask my aunties and uncles what the connection was and see if anybody actually knows or remembers! Regards, Lambros. </pre> </td></tr></table> |
