<pre>Roger,

Leaf analysis is a valuable tool determine nutrient levels in the olives.
It is relatively inexpensive ( approx. $70 -80 per sample) and can be done
by most fertiliser agents, IAMA - of you have IAMA in NSW - large
horticultural supply companies and PIRSA.
It is just a matter of collecting approx 100 or so leaves ( do not take the
extremely young growing tips or the older growth ) from a broad area of the
grove ( keep varieties separate) ie 4 or 5 leaves from a couple of tree is
each row if your grove is large.
These will be send away for analysis and returned to you with nutrient
levels. A good service will often supply you with a report and
recommendations for feeding the trees, or you may need to consult some of
the text books to determine the olives optimum nutrient levels and adjust
your fertiliser regime accordingly.
It is also a good idea to have soil tests every 2 -3 years as the soil will
determine the plant's uptake of nutrients.
We have leaf analysis done on each variety early every spring and find it
worthwhile.
One advantage is you can see if there are any deficiencies before symptons
appear, by which stage the plant is under stress.

Leaf analysis

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>I am regularly asked by people after they have had a leaf analysis done
"what are the benchmarks?". Can anyone on the list refer me to any such
benchmarking that they may know of?

The people doing the analysis seem to be a bit hit and miss about
recommendations, particularly with respect to Boron.
