White spots
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>I have recently noticed some sparse white and brown spots on a few leaves of a 2 or 3 trees in our grove. They appear to resemble Oleander Scale (Plate 17.10) of the UC Olive Production Manual. Has anyone any experience of this in Australia or the Hunter Valley? The spots seem quite innocuous, but are they? Will spraying with white/petroleum oil help the situation? I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Thank you. Liane Heinke Hunter Valley, NSW </pre> </td></tr></table> |

Re: White spots

<pre>Liane, A friend of mine who has Barnea in the Souhertn Highlands region had the same white spots ( a bit like a drop of ink on a blotter) and had it identified as a harmless thrip. It was more prevalent in dry conditions such as we are now experiencing and is more common on white flowers. In this case they had planted clover beneath the olives and were letting it go to seed and hence had a lot of white clover flowers in close proximity to the olive leaves. The thrip seems to leave of its own accord and does no lasting damage. We are north of the Southern Highlands and also have seen the odd leaf with it and have basically ignored the problem as we have more pressing problems with olive lace bug and peacock spot. <pre>David Thank you for your advice. We are experiencing dry conditions but our clover is not flowering. After further inspection , I too thought it looked harmless and did nothing about it. As you say there are more pressing things to do. Best wishes Liane Heinke [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] </pre> </td></tr></table> |
