Chemical Analysis

<pre>Hello, I'm a new member of this group. Since seven years I'm
importing oliveoil from Greece. Here in Belgium, where I'm living,
it's a small but growing market. The oil, extra virgin and with a
perfect aroma, is coming from Zakynthos.
Could anybody give me a good explanation about the meaning of K 270,
K 232 and delta K ? These numbers are used in each chemical analysis.
Thanks a lot for information.

>I think that the terms K232 and K270 refer to the ability of an oil to
absorb ultraviolet light in certain regions of the ultraviolet spectrum
(232 and 270nm). An increase in these K values can indicate that an oil
has been refined, or contains some refined oil, even though it is claimed
to be extra virgin. These measurements can also be used to detect adulterants.

<pre>Dear Alfred Poulos,
Thank you for your information about K232 and k270.
This morning I find an article about spectrophotometric investigation.
This examination in the ultraviolet can provide information on the
quality of a fat, its state of preservation and changes brought about
in it by technological processes.
