I don't know of any relevant books on olive in english. The nursery is the best
source of information.

I'd suggest the Tuscany telephone directory. There are lots of bottling
plants in Tuscany, bottling oil from all over Italy (and all over the
Meditteranean, no doubt), just so they can put the label "Bottled in Tuscany"
on it.

extra virgin olive oil from northern Italy.

Have you considered Australian olive oil. Australia now produces some
top quality extra virgin oils that have not yet been 'discovered' by the
rest of the world. Most people now know the story of how our wines were
overlooked for ages but now they are recognised as some of the very best
- well our olive oils are heading the same way.

I can provide top quality extra virgin olive oil if you are interested.

Do you know much about olive leaf extract and the means of extracting the
active ingredient Oleuropin?

We have been selling fresh olive leaves and dried ground olive leaves for
some time now. The fresh olive leaves are for making olive leaf tea or
puree. The dired ground olive leaves are for making olive leaf tea or
putting in gel caps. Needless to say the olives have to be grown without the
use of artificial pesticides and fertilizers to be able to use the leaves in
this way. We make no claims about the efficacy of such, although we do drink
a glass each day.

You might like to take a look at the book 'Olive Leaf Extract' by Morton
Walker if you haven't already done so. There's a reference on our olive leaf
web page at http://www.ozemail.com.au/~fod/OliveGrove.htm that may help.
That withstanding, I think it might be premature to concentrate on Oleuropin
as THE active ingredient. Given the complexity of the compounds in olive
leaves, in particular the way certain salts of Oleuropin, amongst others,
are absorbed, and the lack of definitive scientific studies, we have opted
to use the whole leaf.

I would be very interested to hear from others about olive leaves.

regards,
Kim

Your assumption that California with the possibility of producing 100000
tons to a high of 160000 tons would be able to strictly go after the
gourmet market, does not take into account that all the Med. wants the US
market because of the dollar. So the only solution to the dilemma is to
draw straws to see who is to continue growing olives and the unfortunate
ones get to plant other crops. I do not want to be the STRAW HOLDER.

<pre>Maurice, if the solution is to draw straws, then that at least means you
believe there is a viable market for domestic production, even if it has to
contract. Is this viable market share based on a price and/or quality
advantage or is it one protected by tariff, subsidy or equivalent?
