tumours on olive branches
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Hello the list Here is a picture of an unknown disease appeared on one of my trees. It looks like tumours. It develops on branches touched by an old hail. But why only on one tree? Thank you to communicate your appreciations to me. Any suggestion will be welcome. By the way, should I cut this branches or what ? You can find the picture of the monster in the “photo” directory. Best regards Saâd Tazi, olive oil producer Rabat, Morocco [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] </pre> </td></tr></table> |

Re: tumours on olive branches
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Hello Saâd Your plants are infected with the bacteria Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi. It's a natural occurring bacteria that is present generally on all olive plants, it infects the branches trough wounds and colonizes the tissues producing plant hormones that originate the uncontrolled growth you have seen. In extreme cases it can also infect leaves and fruit, but this is very rare. The resistance of olive cultivars to this patogem varies greatly, thats probably why there is only one plant in your grove that presents the symptoms, because this plant probaly is of a different cultivar. There is no treatment to this disease, the only thing you can do is to cut the branches paying attention to disinfect the scissors before using them in a wealthy branch. When another hail storm occurs damaging the branches you can prevent infection by treating the tree with copper sulfate, that will disinfect the branches preventing infection (note: you have up to 4 days after the hail storm to treat the plants). Our Australian friends can relax because this patovar doesn't exist in Australia, where its only present the pv. nerii, a patovar with a very low virulence towards olive tree.
