Yellowing leaves
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>I have been off the site for a while and have just rejoined. See the 3 photos under Hollinshead on the group site. Leaves are generally yellowing, which then moves to branches and finally the tree defoliates because it vannot photosynthesise. Leaves are also getting yellow spots on them as can be seen in the photos. Can anyone advise what this is so we can remedy please? Trudy </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>hii Yellowing of olive leafs occur from the Verticillium fungii, causing gradual death of the tree in 3-5 years, or water stress-heat stress, or lack of nitrogen due to competition avaialability problems or water-logged soil My advice: dig around or take out a tree with a tractor and check the soil and root system (take photos and invite other specialists and friends for their opinions Ariel </pre> </td></tr></table> |

<pre>ok - Idid so. went to photos - group logo - but could not find Hollingshead.... Christa Huber Christa, The photos are in the "photos" page. You will have to scroll down, then click on the "see all" link to see all the photos. They are NOT in the group logo folder but a sequence of photos all with Hollinshead as the common part of the name. Hope this helps John Attwood Co-moderator ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christa Huber" <xta@...> To: <OliveOil@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 06, 2005 10:56 PM Subject: Re: [OliveOil] Re: Yellowing leaves > how can I have a look at the photos? Re: Yellowing leaves
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Do you have any problems with waterlogged soil? > No. We are on the side of a hill. Ah! Be very careful with this. A sloping block on the side of a hill can have excellent surface drainage, meaning that the water runs off quickly, but still have problems with waterlogging. If the soil becomes saturated, and this tends to happen with medium density clay quite a bit, then all the air spaces between the soil particles fill with water and the tree starts to suffer. I've seen this on sloping blocks where we have had a couple of days of gentle, steady rain (this was a while ago!) and although the rain ran off nicely, we lost 30-odd trees to root rots due to the clay holding water too well. Having said that, I don't really think that the problem that you have is either Olive Lace Bug as suggested by somebody else, as there doesn't seem to be any black tar-like stuff on the underside of the leaves, and I'm sure you checked for that (didn't you?). The symptoms look like a nutrient deficiency of some sort, and that often means the root system isn't performing its function well, so either waterlogged soil, a low pH or a very high pH, or some root fungal problem are all good contenders. I would echo somebody else's comment and suggest you call in a local agronomist. A leaf test might give you an idea of what the deficiency is. Good luck! Re: Yellowing leaves
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Hello all, we encountered the same problem after a very cold winter. Maybe the lack of permeability in the soil is responsible (badly drained ground). Yellow leaves appeared and falled. The diagnosis of the agricultural technicians was verticilium. We had to replace the tree (a beautiful 4 years subject). Perhaps we should have disinfect the hole before to do so. Sad spectacle (see photo in the folder). The roots were dry whereas the trunk was quite green. I believe that the verticilium acts by asphixie starting from the roots. The leaves located at the ends of the highest branches are the touched first. I have been told to help the roots with a good liquid fertilizer (Foval or Bressol I guess). I think a deep (75 cm) ploughing should also provide the roots with a better breathing. I hope this may help. I don't expect anyone to experiment such frustration. Best regards to all.
