E: Yellowing leaves
<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Hello Trudy It's not possible to diagnose a problem online but there are a number of situations that can cause similar symptoms. I don't know where you are or what management you have applied to the trees etc. In South Australia in autumn to winter we often get some sucking insects causing similar symptoms from the under side of the leaf. One such insect is similar to the Rutherglen bug but we have never identified these insects, merely treated them according to broad spectrum insecticides where appropriate or even biological oils. The other possibility is related to root health I.e. Phytopthera/Pythium. Bronzing and general chlorosis is common in this situation. I have seen similar symptoms from Phosphorous deficiency and even Sprayseed damage to green trunks. I must stress that you need a consultant Agronomist to inspect the trees to find the cause before you attempt to treat them. Online we can only guess or hint as to where the source of the problem is. I am leaning towards sucking insect damage myself but the photos aren't clear enough. There could possibly be a consultant in the discussion group from your area. Cheers Russell March -----Original Message----- From: OliveOil@yahoogroups.com [mailto:OliveOil@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of trudyhollinshead Sent: Saturday, 3 September 2005 10:45 AM To: OliveOil@yahoogroups.com Subject: [OliveOil] Yellowing leaves I have been off the site for a while and have just rejoined. See the 3 photos under Hollinshead on the group site. Leaves are generally yellowing, which then moves to branches and finally the tree defoliates because it vannot photosynthesise. Leaves are also getting yellow spots on them as can be seen in the photos. Can anyone advise what this is so we can remedy please? <pre>Hi Trudy, A few questions that need answering are offered below. Some may not seem relevant to the immediate problem, but all the variables that are likely to impact on this symptom Is the whole grove suffering or only isolated trees? How long does it take for defoliation to take place? What sort of season have you had - cold and wet? Are there 'wet spots' in the paddock? What soil type and fertiliser history? Have you had a comprehensive INDEPENDENT soil test done (and this soil test should ideally include biological status)? Are there signs of earthworms and any other biological activity in the soil? What age are the trees and how long established? I am sure there are a lot of other questions to ask and many have already been covered by the other postings offering opinion. Please let the group know what you find. <pre>Only some trees are affected and they are not located all together. It takes quite a while for the tree to defoliate. Yes, it has been cold and wet, but the trees are on a slope and there is good drainage. The soil is 4.5PH and clay. We had a soil test done before planting 4 years ago and had all the nutrients added that were required. Perhaps we should do this every year? I haven't noticed worms, but the rest of the property does have them. The trees have been planted for 4 years now and we got about 3 kgs olives on average off them this year. Thank you for your interest Gerhard. We are very interested in organic as well.
