White paint on tree trunks

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>I have noticed a couple of groves where the owner has painted a white
substance on the trunks. The trees are well developed so I wouldn't
think that it is for sunburn. Does anyone know what this is.

trunks when the trees were small with a rabbit repellant which was white and
worked well but unfortunately it has now been discontinued. In some parts of
Greece trees are painted with a lime mixture up to about 900mm but I cannot
recall what problem they were attempting to rectify.

<pre>Sounds like "No Nibble" or alike to deter animals like rabbits etc from
damaging the trunks of the trees.

<pre>In Turkey, to protect the trunk of the young trees from severe mediterranean
summer sun, liming the trunk is common in order to prevent sunburns. It is
mostly being applied to olive, orange and fig trees.
