unusual olive deaths

<table border=0 cellpadding=2 cellspacing="0"><tr><td>
<pre>Can anyone tell me why our olive trees are dieing,

We have lost about 30 trees out of 800, But we dont know why
they are dieing! It is happening in all areas of the grove and it
could be one tree between 2 healthy ones or 3 trees in a row.
It doen't seem to matter if they are on the hill or on the flat so I
dont think it is wet feet and no pests or desease that can be seen.
any info would be gratefully accepted
These are the varieties that we have
Frantoio
Manzanillo
Paragon used for polination
All trees were purchased from OA

If the wood of dead trees is like a sponge can be "Formes fulvus oleae".

Sorry, but my page about it - http://taggiasca.com/parassiti/lupa.htm - is
not translated: you can try to read it using an online translator like
http://babelfish.altavista.com, but I don't assure you about a correct
translation.

Also I've no photos because here it's difficult to find this disease.

Bye!

Is it just one of the cv's or all of them that are affected?

I find most deaths this year have come from poor soil preparation (e.g. using
post hole digger instead of recommended ripping) and the holes have filled with
water following our heavy rains. From your address, I presume you are near
Newcastle. Coastal proximity can cause problems as well. See
hunterolives.asn.au for more help.
The tree stock is OK. The care is the problem.

Dale,

Where are you? I assume the Hunter by your e-mail address?

I am based in Pokolbin, but get around the Valley quite a bit, so I'll drop
in and have a look if you like.

E-mail me off the list to avoid clogging things up for everybody else.

Mike Wilson.

Dale, it's possible to see some pics of your dead trees?
Put them somewhere on the web, so I can tell all my friends
English-impaired to take a look.

Bye!

<pre>Graham, tks for that interesting posting. We are also on the coast, in the
Bega Valley, and we have had far less rainfall this year than the Hunter -
chalk and cheese so to speak. We have not experienced any loss of trees as
Dale mentioned. You may be on the right track with too much water!

<pre>Hi Graham thanks for your reply

I may not have given enough info in my post so here is what we have done.

First we used a dozer to cross rip the paddock to about 4foot and then
disced it both ways and lastly power harroded it also incorperateing
poultry manure and lime. We did not use a post hole digger to make the holes
we used a shovel and Good old hard work the trees where planted to
recermended depth
Now the grove is positioned on the side of a slight slopeing paddock which
runs down to a creek this should provide enough runoff the prevent wet feet.
The trees are around three months old and most have active growth.
A small amount of osmacoat was placed in the hole at planting could this
have anything to do with it

PS. I am new to the olive industry as are the owners of the property that i
manage but I have had 15 years experience in the grape growing industry in
pokolbin on a farm with hundred acres of wine grapes and think that my
managerial skills should be enough to allow me to manage this farm with
succes but I am unable to find a reasonable answer as to why we have lost
trees that had been looking good and then just keeled over
any further suggestions will be gratefully accepted

Where exactly is the property? You have to be close to me if you worked in
Pokolbin.
I have an olive grove business called Hunter Olive Grove Services, and am a
founding member of the Hunter Olive Association and Hunter Olive Co-operative.
It sounds to me as if you should join both, or just the association to keep in
touch locally. I have planted about 60,000 trees in the area this year.

See our web site at hunterolives.asn.au for more details.
