Olive growers battle tiny pest

*** Olive growers battle tiny pest

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - California's olive growers are battling a tiny
Mediterranean pest that farmers say could devastate their industry in
just a few years if it continues to spread at its current rapid pace.
Found just two years ago on ornamental trees in back yards and
highway medians throughout Southern California, the pinhead-sized
olive fruit fly has since migrated into the San Joaquin Valley, the
heart of the state's $100 million commercial olive industry. "It is a
dire situation for us - this little beast only likes olives," said
Janet Nelson, manager of the California Olive Committee. Although no
serious damage to commercial crops has been reported, industry
leaders say the pest has the potential to wipe out entire orchards if
left alone to feed and multiply. See

Due to our recent olive fly discovery, we have some excellent slides and
printed material on Olive Fly - adults (male and female), larvae and pupae
in olives, various damage stages etc.. Would you like me to bring some to
Bari?

Regarding the olive fly. Talkingg to Carlo Costa when he was in Perth,
he indicated that if wild olives are around, then the olive fly is not
such a problem. Olive Fly has not been reported in Australia.

Does anyone have a good photo of the Olive Fly preferably sitting on an
olive?
I would like to get a copy. I am willing to pay towards the cost.

Today I had an enquiry about Mediterranean Fruit Fly - a grower last
season had harvested the olive and processed them for eating. When the
prescribed curing time was completed, he found the olives to be soft and
inedible. He cut some open and found damaged flesh due to a "worm" which
he thought was Mediterranean Fruit Fly and hence his enquiry. I have had
several of these reports but I have never seen the fruit.

Does MFF attack olives, what are the sighns and symptoms and how can the
problem be mannaged.

Regarding olive fly ... In the year 1999 "vintage" we picked UC13A6 which had
fly and we had to dump the lot rather
than take a chance with bottled fruit that may have labelled us for life.
Being the "Pitt Street farmer" I had planted 25 loquat trees along the UC row
(because I used to enjoy climbing the
neighbour's fence when I was a kid and destroying his crop) and presumed they
were the carrier. They went to heaven,
along with 50 figs and 25 apricots, just in case.
In year 2000 we had no evidence of fly and, as stated before, our fruit
(pickled, marinated etc.) is great.

Stan, I have uploaded a picture (fly.jpg) in the Members Folders of the Files
area of the OliveOil group.

This fly is easily recognizable by the body colours: some red, dark, yellow;
eyes are nearly iridescent green.

<pre>Dear Graham

Thanks for the information on fruit fly and its eradication from your
orchard. Was it Mediterranean or Queensland?

Also those in the real Mediterranean - has Mediterranean fruit fly been
a problem? Increasing acid in the oil?
